The Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner has the following employment opportunities:


Attorney Assistant (Trenton, NJ)
Working with a Regulatory Officer 1, this position will understand and interpret laws and regulations in support of the Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner and prepare responses to inquiries regarding legal matters and draft, coordinate and implement the revision of the regulations governing the practice of the NJ medical examiner system. The selected candidate will assist the Regulatory Officer 1 and Chief State Medical Examiner in the supervisory role over the County Medical Examiners in disciplinary procedures regarding compliance to the laws, regulations and guidelines, process and prepare legal correspondence on behalf of the Chief State Medical Examiner as well as to citizen complaints regarding the certified cause and manner of death by the County Medical Examiners; assist in overseeing the processing for Open Public Record Act requests to include Chief State Medical Examiner official documents, autopsies and reports as part of the case file, comprehensive/compiled statistical data and reports from government agencies, private non-profit agencies, educational institutions, law enforcement and media. Will also work with the Regulatory Officer 1 reviewing and preparing contracts and Memorandum of Agreements/Understandings between the Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner and other governmental agencies and independent consultants.

Investigator 1 (Trenton, NJ)
Review routine and sensitive investigations of deaths reported to the Regional or County Medical Examiner Offices in New Jersey. The position will also provide assistance in disaster preparedness and emergency management activities and response. Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, staffing the State Emergency Operations Center during planned or unplanned events and assisting in complex medicolegal operations that may occur as a result of a large-scale incident.

Investigator 2 (Trenton, NJ)
The Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner is seeking an Investigator to review complex and sensitive investigations of deaths reported to the Regional or County Medical Examiner Offices, applying problem solving methods for routine and complex issues for case review evaluation and inspection of all medical examiner offices in New Jersey. This position will play a major role in disaster preparedness and emergency management activities and response. Responsibilities include, but not be limited to staffing the State Emergency Operations Center during planned or unplanned events and assisting in complex medicolegal operations that may occur as a result of a large-scale incident. The successful candidate will also play a role in the development of an inspection process for review of medical examiner offices and perform the duties of a medicolegal death investigator for reported cases such as Medical Aid in Dying and cases involving a death in police custody. Other functions of this position will surround the development of standard operating procedures and policies relating to medicolegal death investigation and fatality management services, taking a lead role in organizing educational sessions for the medicolegal dealth investigation system and representing the Office of Chief State Medical Examiner on fatality review boards as necessary.

Histotechnologist (Newark, NJ)
The Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner Northern Regional Medical Examiner Office is seeking an individual to perform the duties of Histotechnologist. Duties shall include, but not be limited to, receiving tissue sections for processing through paraffin using automated equipment and preparing said tissues for routine H&A, special stains and immunostains as needed. Other responsibilities include maintaining inventory of prepared slides, tissues and supplies. The selected candidate will also develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to duties of the section, including rentention and disposition of tissues.

Forensic Scientist 3 (Newark, NJ)
The New Jersey Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner is seeking a Forensic Scientist to oversee the day-to-day management and operations of the NJ State Toxicology Laboratory, who will function as the Deputy Chief Toxicologist, and work with the Executive Director to manage daily operations. The selected candidate will: Oversee assignment delegations and manage the workflow of the laboratory staff, to include time sheet approvals as well as evaluations (ePARS) for the staff. Update, revise and, if needed, write new SOP’s, and ensure that SOP manuals are both current and up-to-date and are appropriately distributed to all staff. Oversee training and assessment of laboratory staff, and maintain up-to-date training records for the employees in accordance with CAP and ABFT guidelines. Work with the Business Office and OCSME IT staff on purchasing and service requests/ contracts for all instruments in the Lab. Provide oversight and monitor the quality and efficiency of the laboratory, including but not limited to monthly reviews of lab screenings and quality control of data. Provide court testimony when needed. Preference will be given to candidates who possess Fellow/Diplomate certification by the American Board of Toxicology and have experience.
