The mission of the Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner (OCSME) is to oversee the medical examiner system in the State through the creation and enforcement of operating and performance standards for every medical examiner office in New Jersey. This will ensure the highest level of service possible in the investigation and documentation of suspicious, sudden, and unexpected deaths. The service provided shall be timely, compassionate, and based on unbiased scientific opinions while respecting cultural and religious traditions.

This mission will be carried out through the following means:
  • Modernize and standardize protocols across the medical examiner system.
  • Strengthen oversight of county and regional medical examiner offices to ensure adherence to standard practices that meet statutory requirements and national guidelines.
  • Improve infrastructure and invest in personnel at the OCSME central office in Trenton, as well as the Northern and Southern Regional Medical Examiner Offices.
  • Provide timely and accurate data and reporting of public health priorities such as the opioid epidemic.
  • Foster an academic environment for training in the field of forensic science.
  • Provide for the efficient and responsible use of all public funds allocated to this office.
